A global daily precipitation dataset has recently been published by the MiKlip-DAPAGLOCO project

Three different spatially resolved versions are available for a record length of 21 years (1988-2008). It combines rain gauge measurements over land with satellite-based remote sensing data over ocean for the purpose of the evaluation of the MiKlip decadal prediction system. The evaluation process is primarily based on Expert on Climate Change and Detection Indices (ETCCDI) which allow for the investigation of climatology characteristics and extreme values.

The DAPAGLOCO precipitation dataset is presented in Dietzsch et al. (2017) and forms the basis to, for the first time, generate a global ETCCDI climatology that covers land and ocean areas. The climatology is computed over the entire record length in order to improve the identification of extreme precipitation characteristics, e.g., flood and drought periods. Several precipitation indices are investigated with focus an global precipitation distribution, and for Europe and Monsoon Asia with more detail. The climatology represents known climatological features well, as there are for example orthographically induced larger precipitation amounts on certain coastal areas, as well as regions with periodically occurring tropical storm systems.

Currently, the dataset is improved by adding new satellite imager data (e.g., GMI) as well as new rain gauge data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) at the DWD, by introduction of a new rain rate retrieval algorithm (1D-Var) for satellite-based microwave imager data over ocean, and by an improved merging algorithm that combines both datasets over land and ocean to the final product.

In future efforts, the updated dataset is going to be used for further evaluation of precipitation characteristics of the MiKlip decadal forecast system based on ETCCDI, probabilistic approaches, and correction of bias and drift in collaboration with other MiKlip projects (e.g., DROUGHTCLIP and PROVESIMAC).
